Minimum wage increase in 2024

A new year, a new beginning. Some changes await us in 2024. One of them is very positive: The minimum wage will continue to rise in the Netherlands. Good news if you will be working in the Netherlands in 2024.

There are two big changes. First, the amount of the minimum wage depended on the number of hours you worked. That meant that if you worked 40 hours at a company you earned less per hour than someone working 36 hours at a company. As of Jan. 1, this will be equalized and there will be a statutory minimum wage. From then on, the minimum wage will be the same for everyone (per hour) regardless of the length of the work week. So working more pays off.
In addition, the amount per hour will also go up. For a 36-hour workweek, this is an increase of 3.75%, and for a 40-hour workweek, you will improve by over 15%.

Spillover effect

The Dutch government expects that there will be a spillover effect. This means that workers currently earning just above the minimum wage will also benefit. It is expected that employers will allow these wages to rise as well.  Otherwise, workers who have been working for this wage for a number of years would be "overtaken" by the new minimum wage. How this will work out is not yet fully known. It also has a lot to do with which collective bargaining agreement you fall under as an employee and which industry you work in. At this time, not all the details are known about the collective bargaining agreement, premiums and other information for 2024. As soon as we know more about this, we will notify our employees.
